Darkwood has had that name for as long as written records exist, and has always been associated with evil deeds and monstrous horrors. Some of these tales are simply legends meant to entertain or frighten, but there is no doubt that bizarre and terrible creatures do live there. Most infamous are the Spider Queens, huge arachnids who feast upon men and horses the way common spiders do upon flies. Other dire beasts sometimes venture forth in the night for victims, if a harsh winter or overbreeding limit the foodstuffs in the forest itself.
The persistent evil of this place is part of why Whiteblade Keep was built and garrisoned, and why Proudstone has become the home of the Academy of Iron.
